A step-by-step guide: Tips and tricks for finding your perfect jeans size

Kate Moss once said “I can’t imagine the world without jeans” and we could not agree more!

There are some never-out-of-fashion items that are must-haves in everyone’s closet and denim is certainly one of them.

Jeans are chic, comfortable as well as easy to style for different occasions. Therefore finding a pair that fits you is a true blessing.

However, when we try to choose pants in online stores, navigating through different sizes and numerous models might feel like a true curse…

But don’t worry, BOAS is here to help to find the jeans of your dreams by sharing tips and tricks of:

Measure a Great-Fitting Pair of Jeans

Probably the easiest way to find the right sizing is to measure the jeans that already fit you!

Here are the steps how:

  1. Pick the right pair of jeans! These should be of the same style and cut as the ones you want to buy. If you aim for skinny jeans then measuring oversized ones would not work. More importantly, make sure that you pick the jeans that you feel great while wearing.
  2. Put the jeans on a firm surface, such as a table or floor
  3. Button them up and smooth out any wrinkles or bunches in the fabric
  4. Take a flexible measuring tape ( a ruler won’t work as it’s not flexible enough to measure around curves)
  5. Grab a piece of paper to take notes of measurements
  6. Measure the waist and multiply it by two to get the full length needed for jeans.
  7. Then move to inseam - the distance from the crotch seam to the ankle
  8. Now measure straight across the fabric at the widest part of the thigh or hip and then double the measurement
  9. For the rise measurement, start at the crotch seam and go up to the top of the waistband

Measuring yourself

If you want to purchase jeans of a different style than you already have and get the most accurate sizing then measuring yourself is the way to go! Here are some tips on how to do it:

  • Wear form-fitting clothing or no clothing at all - this will give you the most precise numbers
  • Use a soft measuring tape
  • Measure your waist by wrapping the measuring tape around the narrowest part of your waist (usually just above your belly button). But keep in mind that the part of the waist you will measure depends on what kind of style of jeans you want. For example, if you prefer high-waste jeans then that is where you would like to measure.
  • To measure your inseam, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and measure from your crotch down to your ankle bone, or where you would like the jeans to fall
  • While measuring your hips, wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips
  • Take notes of the measurements

Converting Your Waist Measurement To Jeans Size

Once you noted down your measurements it’s time to find which jeans size is right for you:

  • Check the brand’s size chart, which you can find on their website or in their stores. Look for the measurements that correspond to yours and note the corresponding size
  • If the chart is in inches, convert it to centimeters:  1 inch corresponds to 2.54 cm. Divide the determined values by 2.54 cm.
  • Remember that W stands for waist size and L for the inseam (or leg length)
  • While buying jeans online, consider purchasing from brands that offer free returns or exchanges
Don't forget that each brand or country might have a different sizing system, so make sure to double-check before ordering.

What to do if I bought jeans and they do not fit?

We know the painful feeling of waiting for a week until your dream jeans arrive just to look not like you wanted. But don’t worry the hope is still here. There are numerous ways to fix this!

    • Return or exchange the jeans
    • Alter the jeans by using a belt, cutting the ends, or asking for the help of the tailor
    • Repurpose your jeans! Remember that you can always cut them and turn them into shorts or just use denim in any other creative ways
    • Pin the jeans: Use safety pins or straight pins to mark the areas that need to be altered. Pin along the seam lines so that you can easily see how much fabric needs to be taken in or let out.
    • Sell or donate the jeans
